WORKING MEETINGS SUMMIT2006

Participants:
Heads of nuclear safety departments of the IAEA member countries and delegates from the European Union (EU), the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO), and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Mr. Lawrence Williams, Director of the Nuclear Safety Directorate at the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, UK, has been elected Conference President.

Goals and Tasks:
The participants will discuss nuclear and radiation safety and international cooperation in safe uses of nuclear energy, highlighting the rights of nuclear and radiation safety organizations and the strengthening of their autonomy, and the improvement of safety procedures.

They are to formulate recommendations on enhancing the efficiency of national nuclear safety agencies, discuss the common safety aspects of new nuclear technologies, and choose new instruments of international cooperation for tackling modern challenges to nuclear safety.

The Conference President will make a Final Statement on the results of the conference. The IAEA Secretariat will subsequently publish the reports and speeches by conference participants.

A briefing for Russian and foreign journalists devoted to the beginning of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) International Conference on Effective Nuclear Regulatory Systems, “Facing Safety and Security Challenges,” will be held in Moscow’s President Hotel at 5:30 p.m. on February 27, 2006.

The Russian organizer of the conference is the Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service of Russia (Rostekhnadzor).
